“The best waste is no waste at all.”
Waste is all around us, and we continue to produce more and more of it.
Our planet and our health are suffering from single-use disposable products. Recycling, although gaining ground, is only a small part of the solution. In theory, the idea of recycling our waste is appealing. In practice, it may be preventing us from moving beyond the “disposable era.”
This is because not everything that is recyclable is recycled, far from it: conflicts of interest, “innovative” plastic resins that we don't know how to handle, competition between recycled raw materials and virgin raw materials, etc. Numerous flaws in the recycling system explain why some of our waste, even recyclable waste, is still buried, incinerated, or exported abroad. Simply seeking to recycle is not sustainable in the long term, as it means producing and filling another landfill. If we want to see a sustainable future, it is essential to rethink the way we consume.
The idea is to adopt a “less is more” approach: consume less and get as much, if not more, out of it. The key for the environment is to reduce the purchase of overpackaged products and move towards a more sensible way of consuming.
OUR GOAL
Producing everything that goes into Les Flacons de l'Apothicaire in France has been one of our goals since the project began. We looked into the feasibility of French production. Unfortunately, the quantities required and the cost of developing the molds are far too high for a young start-up :-( That's why, after discussions with several professionals in the sector, we decided to initially produce the bottles in Europe and the pumps in Asia, so that the concept remains affordable. We hope that the quantities sold will enable us to develop molds in France very soon, while maintaining the same prices!
"I am my first customer! Les Flacons de l'Apothicaire was born out of my encounter with Aurélie, a minimalist coach who taught me and introduced me to the practice of zero-waste decluttering. She made me aware of the impact of our waste and plastic in general on the environment. Wanting to purify and homogenize my interior, I naturally looked for attractive, designer containers labeled according to their use, which I could fill with products purchased from the bulk distributor in my local store... without success. So I decided to order glass containers and metal pumps from a wholesaler. As a trained graphic designer, I designed the labels, and Les Flacons de l'Apothicaire was born..." Emmanuelle Roca, founder of the brand.
